Senator Andreychuk expresses condolences on the passing of Professor Orest Subtelny

OTTAWA, ON - Senator Andreychuk has expressed condolences on the passing of prominent Ukrainian historian Professor Orest Subtelny on July 24, 2016.

“We have lost an invaluable member of our community. An eminent scholar, Professor Subtelny’s influence extended beyond the Ukrainian-Canadian community to reach international audiences,” said Senator Andreychuk. “His scholarship has made an indelible mark in our understanding of Ukraine, its people and its history.”

Throughout his academic career, as a professor of history and political science, Professor Subtelny published six books, in addition to 55 academic articles and book chapters, on Eastern European and Ukrainian history. His seminal work, Ukraine: A History, published in 1988, remains a definitive statement on the history of Ukraine. As director to several Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) projects in Ukraine from 1998 to 2012, Professor Subtelny played an active role in strengthening Canada-Ukraine relations.

“I wish to extend my sincere condolences to Professor Subtelny’s wife, Professor Maria Subtelny, his son, Dr. Alexander Subtelny, friends and family.”
